Zwaagdijk-Oost, 18 July 2024 – Today, coinciding with store openings in Saint-Ouen-sur Seine (France) and Albacete (Spain), non-food discounter Action announced its trading update for the first half of 2024.
Half year net sales rose to €6.2 billion (+20.1% compared to the same period in 2023). Like-for-like sales increased by 9.0%. Sales growth is due to selling more products to new and existing customers. So far this year, Action has reduced more than 1,300 product prices, in addition to last year’s 2,500 price reductions. Action has welcomed 17.3 million customers a week on average over the past six months in 2,685 stores in 12 countries. Action added 119 new stores this period and is on track to open 330 new stores this year.
Further investments in Action’s own brands
Action is strengthening the Action formula by investing in its own private label range. Hajir Hajji, CEO: “Our customers greatly appreciate Action’s own brands because of their unbeatable price and quality. That’s why we are continuously investing in the quality and sustainability of these products. We started with our prize-winning sun protection range Zenova, and are continuing with our cleaning range Spargo and our sustainably sourced bath and bed linen Hotel Royal. Customer reviews, product tests and consumer prizes illustrate the progress and impact our private labels are making.”
Customer satisfaction remains the key pillar supporting Action’s growth. In Germany, Action was named ‘Price Champion’ in non-food by news daily DIE WELT and research firm ServiceValue. The Dutch retail brands survey (‘Retail Merkenonderzoek’) named Action as one of the brands whose customer base is expected to grow further. Action is in the top 3 best-known retail brands in the Netherlands. Action also received three awards in Poland: ‘Listonic No. 1 Non-Food Discounter’, ‘Best Retail Employer 2024’, and the ‘Retail Business Award’.
More than 72,000 Action colleagues
Action continues to develop as a major employer. So far this year, 3,182 new jobs have been created. In Germany, we welcomed our 13,000th colleague. Action now employs 72,222 colleagues of 159 nationalities. Investment in growth and development opportunities has led to 1,885 internal promotions over the past six months, strengthening Action’s DNA as the company is growing. Through training and promotions, Action colleagues grow alongside the company’s development.
Supporting Action’s international expansion, Action’s first distribution centre (DC) in Italy started deliveries to stores on 6 May. Certified as ‘Excellent’ according to sustainable building certification system BREEAM, the DC’s central location in Altedo allows Action to serve a larger area. Action now operates 87 stores in Italy and recently opened its first store in Puglia.
